(Sorry this isn't advice) I feel the same way but in celestia. I am and the best spell i have is a centaur and i have mostly heal cards. I feel the same way.

1) at your level, the best non-crowns gear for all schools is waterworks (which takes forever to get) or the wintertusk crafted set. they're pretty similar, stat-wise.
2) think about what talents you want and start hatching with someone who has them. note that all pet talents are random and that it could take 3 tries or 30 before you get something worth keeping.
my advice: if the pet you hatch doesn't manifest the talents you want by adult, stop there. no sense wasting snacks and energy on such an obvious bust.

The best gear for you at your level would be the Avalon crafted gear. If you aren't a high enough crafting level you could try the Wintertusk crafted gear or the WaterWorks gear.
