Oh man, I want the chickens! While in your house, click the "place item" button (bed with arrow, near your compass). Click the box of chickens (sometimes you have to move your wizard around to find an angle from which you can click an item) and click the "pick up" button. This puts it in your backpack, from which you can trash it or sell it in a shop. If you can't select the item while the "place item" bar is open, this is a bug with the item, and filing a support request is probably the best way to go.
Purpose of chickens? Same as all the other gobbler stuff in and from Colossus Blvd: pure silliness. You could try to win a pile of jellybeans from Prince Gobblestone to put beside the chickens; then at least they would never be hungry. :D

First I WON that box from a fight with Mailstaire. The box doesn't open, I've already tried everything. I can spin the box, or move it but no open to let the chickens out.
I'd love to give things to folks with houses, but that isn't an option....yet.... will it be? don't know, but it would be fun.
