I am asking this question because i started Azteca at level 80, and i need to get to level 90 in order to go on to Khrysalis. Will it take 10 levels, or should i collect side quests?

You'll make 90 before the end just by doing the storyline, astral school and spell quests.
You should be fine when it comes to quests, you won't need to do any side quests, I didn't and was level 90 when I reached the end of the Floating Mountains.
Azteca quests would bring you up 10 levels so you don't need to do side quests. The only side quests you should do are the quests Prospector Zeke and Eloise Merryweather for training points and the astral school quests if you train them. Hope this helps
